Sample Program

The graduate program in the Graduate Group in Microbiology offers a great deal of flexibility to its students that no single sample program can describe. Before taking the Qualifying Examination, each student will have taken the core courses and satisfied deficiencies in coursework required for an undergraduate major in Microbial Biology. Students must also participe in at least two seminars. Beyond this, students should take courses in other departments in subject areas related to the student's interests. Such courses for instance might be in biochemistry, genetics, environmental engineering, molecular biology, or plant and animal pathology.

This sample program meets the student's interests and removes academic deficiencies.

* Required course. the Group recommends PMB 112, 116 and 216 for students deficient in microbiology.

A number of University departments with expertise in microbial biology offer many courses appropriate for graduate students with interests in virology, mycology, ecology, evolution, environmental engineering or pathogenesis. Consult the UCB Online Catalog or view from that URL information about how to buy a printed catalog.
