Course description
This course will focus on the metabolic and phylogenetic
diversity of the myriad of microorganisms in our
environment. Emphasis will be placed on the role
that diverse organisms play in the formation of
our environment and the factors that control metabolic
dominance. Topics will include thermodynamic and
genetic constraints on metabolic diversity observed
in our biosphere. Elemental cycles will also be
covered with emphasis on the interrelationships
between the various geochemical cycles and the
microbial trophic groups involved.
