Jean received her B.S. in Integrative Biology at UC Berkeley in June 1994. After graduating from Berkeley, Jean attended New Mexico State University and received her M.S. in Biology in 1996. She received her Ph.D. in Plant Science in Keith Clay's lab at Indiana University in 2002. Currently Jean is a research associate in the college of Biological Sciences at the University of Minnesota.
