Bitty received her PhD in Botany from the Rancho Santa Anna Botanic Garden graduate program in Botany in 1992 (Claremont Graduate School). After receiving her degree she worked as a postdoc at UC Davis for 3 years. She then worked as a professor of Evolutionary Ecology at the Geobotanical Institute in the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich Switzerland. Effective May 30, 2001, Bitty is a faculty member of the Biology Department at the University of Oregon in Eugene.
