Antonio's research and collaborations have mostly centered around the ecology of ectomycorrhizal (ECM) communities in mixed species forest, primarily in the Sierra Nevada mixed-conifer forest.
Antonio received his Ph.D. from UC Berkeley in June 2004 and worked as a post doc in Mark Mazzola's lab at the Agricultural Research Service (USDA) in Wenatchee, Washington. His work there examined how soil bacteria and fungi enhance or suppress plant disease.
In August of 2007, Antonio joined the faculty at Elon University in Elon North Carolina.
