Professor and Student

This is a very exciting time for the life sciences, and Plant & Microbial Biology at UC Berkeley is the place to be when it comes to cutting-edge research and top academics. We are committed to providing an outstanding education to undergraduate and graduate students, as well as a creative and nurturing environment to post-doctoral researchers. We are on the cusp of amazing breakthroughs in science and technology, and at the forefront in our field.

We were recently rated the Number One Plant Biology department in the nation, and Number Three for Microbiology by the National Research Council in an extensive, $7 million study completed last year, that analyzed graduate programs in the United States.

Plastid-localized GFP expression (green) and chlorophyll autofluorescence (red) in the leaf epidermis of Arabidopsis thaliana. The completion of genome sequences and the development of powerful new technologies for analyzing genes and the proteins they encode are revolutionizing the life sciences. The potential exists to answer questions about the function of cells, and whole organisms, in ways that didn't even exist 10 years ago.

Our programs emphasize hands-on, scientific research where students work in the labs along with their professors. We train and prepare students for productive careers in academia or private industry. We encourage and include the latest applications in bioinformatics and computational biology, and are instrumental in creating programs that keep pace with the latest scientific developments.
